BLKBRY® has the first freestanding doula center with a community milk bank in Washington State founded and led by a Black person of enslaved Africans from the US descent. It was difficult for me at first to claim this, but I'm claiming it!!
I honestly found difficulty wording that I had accomplished this because for one, how can we will still be having "firsts" in this day and age?! Also, in an amazing conversation about how many of our ancestors, grandmas, aunties, and cousins were opening their homes as "unofficial" free-standing centers for Black folks to receive holistic care. I'm proud to be among the folks that have opened up spaces... safe spaces for Black folks to seek support.
BLKBRY takes a human-centered design approach by centering Black experiences and needs in reproductive, perinatal and infant care. And the new physical space is designed around those experiences and needs as well.
BLKBRY® is Blackity Black Black!
I acknowledge that Black refers to people of African descent across the diaspora (Black, Descendants of Enslaved Africans, African-American, Afro-Latinx, Afro-Caribbean, Black and Indigenous, and African Immigrant), and BLKBRY is here for all BLACK folks!
BLKBRY is also a space for Black Birthworkers to gather, host classes and trainings, and a space to see their Black families. Black Birthworkers are also able to access the resources at BLKBRY for the Black families they support as well.
While Black is not synonymous with low income, we cannot ignore the horrific statics regarding birth and infant mortality rates, and lactation and nursing rates for Black birthing people. And, while not everyone is called to be a birth worker in order to create change, there are other ways that folks can support and positively impact a Black birthing experience.
BLKBRY has already started providing books at no-cost to Black pregnant families and Black birthworkers. However, books can be costly and are in high demand as reproductive and childbirth education is extremely important for our community. I strive to make sure that Black folks feel seen and represented in reproductive and birth work, which is why I primarily stock books by Black birthworkers.
If you feel called to contribute to BLKBRY by purchasing books for the free-standing doula center, please click on the image below. You can bring the books to BLKBRY on a donation drop-off day, or have them mailed directly to:
